A New Hour...

a little sartorial inspiration: Jane, the lovely Elizabeth of The Littlest, Jackie, Linda, vintagestreet style

A couple of weeks ago I pulled up to a birthday party after being lost for 45 minutes with a baby who screamed the entire time and immediately burst into tears...my lovely friend Katie gave me a big hug and said "Don't worry, it's a new hour"...it was so simple but just the perfect thing to say and has really stuck with me through the last couple weeks...needless to say I adore my girls but occasionally the transition from one to two has been a little rocky...and I love the idea that it doesn't have to be a new day or week to push the proverbial restart button - just simply a new hour!  Case in point, Saturday night I had to put the two girls to bed by myself, which is often the case as my Mr. has to go out to shows at night, and neither one would settle down...I was not being very cool about it because, frankly, I wanted just a tiny bit of alone time...after an hour of tossing and turning Lila whined "I'm huuuunnnngry" so I threw up my hands, pulled them out of bed, gave her a bowl of cereal, and snuggled on the couch while we watched "Secrets of a Stylist" (LOVE!)...I rolled my eyes and said "You girls are driving me crazy!" and Lila and I had a good laugh...We finally all fell back to sleep together, happy & peaceful...So even at 8:30 pm it was okay to restart...
Saturday - thrifted top, J Crew pixie pant, beaded sandals, Laura Lombardi Scale necklace...
Lazy sunday - Steven Alan Catalina Dress...

which brings me to my little "Get Dressed" challenge...I haven't been breaking any style records but it has certainly been a mood booster...how about you?? Thank you especially to Estelle, Torrie, Molly, Shannon and Danielle for tweeting their pics too so I keep motivated & don't feel like a total goofball ;) You all look fantastic!!Anyone else want to join in?
xoxo, M

  1. I LOVE THIS POST! I'm screaming. Can you tell? My heart felt tight as I was reading about you being lost, late for the party, baby screaming, and your friend saying the perfect words and that hug. I know those hugs and how appreciated they are in those early days when everything is a bit too crazy. It was all so beautifully written and the images were perfect. Well done, mama. You are doing great - every step of the way.

  4. This was such a great post, and Michelle, you have me totally obsessed with Steven Alan now! Those dresses look fab on you! I also strive to be a little boho/hippie mom sometimes with wide leg pants and clogs, too cute.

And I feel your pain. That is such a great mantra "It's a new hour". My husband and I are contemplating having another child, and I wonder how much more chaotic it will be, and whether or not I am ready. One is hard enough! The screaming is by far the worst thing for me about being a parent. I hate when I don't know how to help them. I've grown to hate the weekends because my little guy is totally off his schedule and doesn't want to nap! Luckily, it's Monday. A new week :)

Thanks for including me! Can't wait to see more style photos, this is so fun!

  5. Michelle,
This post just makes me wanna come hug you and shake up some martinis. A new hour. Perfect just as it is. I love it.
And I agree with everyone...you look so fab. I saw the "get dressed" post and I thought I would like to jump in but it is 110 in the shade right now. It's difficult to manage much of anything but a swimsuit! Sigh...maybe I will come up with something! :)
    Best,
    Tina

  6. I understand entirely. You have not only inspired me to get out of my rut, but you remind me that i'm not alone... We're in this together. And to remind each other that there's always a 'new hour' just right around the corner.

  7. Love your monday look! And also love the idea of restarting at a new hour, it really does sound like such a great trick. And snuggling up and watching secrets of a stylist sounds pretty awesome if you ask me.

  8. I love, love this post, and am most definitely going to be taking it to heart as we transition from one kiddo to two next month. I totally identify with how important a hug from a good friend and some inspirational words are -- and what good ones your friend had! A new hour . . . definitely an idea to hold on to.

Love your blog (and shop!) btw . . . have been following silently for a couple of months now! :)

  9. A new hour indeed! I have had those moments too and love how your friend chose to say "a new hour". Sounds more hopeful. Transitioning from one to two was harder for me than two to three. Hang in there - you are doing fabulously :)

  10. I love this series. I would join but all I wear are shorts and tees lately. I have to chase my crawling baby all over everywhere.

And the transition from 1 to 2 kids was really hard here. It gets so, so much better. I know you know that but just a reminder. You have a lovely family.

  11. Great post & words of wisdom. Its a new hour is way better than its a new day. I'm holding on to that one. The transition from 1 to 2 was the hardest for me. It will get a little easier every day (I should tell myself this too - ha).

  12. You are such a good (and fashionable--love the outfits!) mama, Michelle! It is a rough road sometimes. I remember when my husband was a resident, many nights putting the kiddos to bed by myself. I think it sounds like you handled it much better than I did. "A new hour" is so very true. I'm going to remember that, too...

  13. looking pretty good!

1 to 2 is hard. I'm just doing 2 to 3 which so far seems not so hard but then my husband is still off on his maternity leave! It may all change next week!

  16. I'm in love with all of the pictures you posted! And this has got to be the best piece of advice a mom could receive! Something we need to constantly remind ourselves of. This will surely become my new mantra.

    Thanks, Michelle!

And love the outfits. Thanks for the sartorial inspiration.
